Like many of you, at America On Tech we were deeply disheartened by the recent news that the United States Supreme Court has decided to ban affirmative action in colleges. Since the 1960’s, Affirmative Action has been a bedrock policy of the United States’ commitment to reversing the disastrous impact of slavery and segregation that set back the Black community for generations and continue to reverberate today.
For those of us committed to the modern anti-racist movement, this decision is an unequivocal step backwards for our nation where communities of color struggle to achieve equity. At America On Tech we want to make one message abundantly clear: AOT remains unapologetically committed to supporting Black and Latinx youth to ensure they have a fair shot at degrees and careers in technology. We plan to redouble our efforts in light of this news. Last month, AOT brought together 49 students and their family members to celebrate their successful completion of our TECH360 Coding Bootcamp. This program cycle marks the 3rd cohort we have served since expanding to the region in summer of 2022. Over the past year, 178 high school students have enrolled in AOT’s Miami programs. 97% of our students identify as Black, Latinx, or mixed race and 57% identify as Female or Non-Binary.
“AOT is incredibly proud of the progress we have made in the Miami region over the past year,” says America On Tech co-founder and CEO Jessica Santana. “At AOT we are committed to expanding opportunities for underestimated Black and Latinx students across the country and we look forward to growing our presence in Miami for years to come. AOT is proud to introduce the graduating class of the 2022-2023 Tech Flex Leaders program! Last week, AOT hosted graduation ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York City for 281 students - our biggest graduating class ever! Parents, AOT staff, and community members were in attendance as our graduates presented their final projects and were awarded plaques for their commitment and hard work.
As of last week, AOT’s 2022-2023 Tech Skills Alumni Fellowship Program is now complete! Congratulations to all our immensely talented graduates for participating in this year’s programs. Learn more about their experiences below.
