America On Tech (AOT) is excited to announce that this summer it is partnering with NBCUniversal and Youth Design Center to bring in-demand tech skills to 50 East New York and Brownsville students this summer through 2, three-week camps! The camps are a 4 day a week/3 week program in web design and web development. Throughout the program students can expect to learn industry-aligned technical and professional skills. By the end of the program, they will have demonstrated mastery of HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap and will have worked in a team to create and present a final website during the end-of-program Demo Day competition. Each week will kick off with a technologist guest speaker and during Weeks 1 and 2, students will attend a Career Day with employees from tech companies. All sessions will be hosted via Zoom and students who successfully complete the program will receive a $750 stipend. The entire 2021 technology camp will operate virtually.
COVID-19 has had a disproportionate effect on our students and the communities they represent. Particularly in Brooklyn, the number of COVID-19 cases has been massive in comparison to other cities. Many of AOT’s and YDC’s students and their families have experienced high levels of economic stress during this time due to reduced hours and lost wages. Further, rates of infection were higher for low income communities, where there are a higher percentage of people of color: AOT's and YDC’s students' communities. “We are very excited to be working with YDC a second year in a row to bring these opportunities to students this summer in partnership with NBCUniversal. As founders of America On Tech (AOT), we are passionate about making sure that students have the opportunities to succeed in 21st century careers. Technology skills are in-demand and we know that this partnership is a vehicle to ensure racial and economic justice for East New York and Brownsville youth in the tech sector.” - Jessica Santana and Evin Robinson, America On Tech "Youth Design Center is grateful for the continued partnership of America on Tech in our collaboration to provide best-in-class tech education and exposure to youth in Brownsville and East New York, with the support of NBCUniversal. Our shared commitment to our community, to equity and economic justice powers our dynamic offerings and supportive services that best positions our youth for success as they pursue their careers." Quardean Lewis-Allen, Founder and CEO, Youth Design Center “NBCUniversal is proud to support the work of America on Tech and Youth Design Center, two organizations at the forefront of providing resources and skills training to students in need. This is a critical time for young people who were disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, further revealing the economic opportunity gap that exists for low income communities. The two-week camps will help the youth from these communities get set up for success in an increasingly digital world.” - Jessica Clancy, Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility at NBCUniversal About America On Tech America On Tech (AOT) is an award-winning nonprofit organization on a mission to prepare the next generation of technology leaders in order to decrease the economic and racial wealth gap in underestimated communities.
