America On Tech is excited to announce the launch of a new program in partnership with Forbes. This fall, 22 students enrolled in our Tech Flex Leaders program will work with 23 Forbes staff writers to finalize personal statements for the 2020-2021 college application cycle. All students accepted into America On Tech’s 2020-2021 Tech Flex Leaders program were invited to apply to this program with Forbes. We accepted 22 high school seniors who would be applying to attend college during the Fall 2021 semester and who demonstrated a need for support through the application process.
The program consists of four, 60-minute sessions led by the Forbes team. During the introductory session, students learned what makes a college essay successful and began brainstorming topics for their own personal statements. During the second session, students were paired with their Forbes mentor who will work with them one-on-one to finalize their personal statements through the remaining three sessions. After just one session with his mentor, AOT student George Sucuzhanay had this to say: "The Forbes and AOT writing program helped me tremendously in deciding which Common App prompt to write about in my personal statement. My mentor Katie and I had such an extraordinary conversation over zoom about my love for tech and how it has shaped who I am from a young age. My mentor had amazing suggestions that I feel will make my essay stand out. Before this program, I was worried that I would not be able to find the right prompt and storytell my essay. I am now confident in the outline that we wrote and will be continuing to write my personal statement." Another AOT student, Nataly Castillo, added: "This writing program is really helping me through the stressful process of completing my college applications, especially with my being a first generation student. It really provided me with a guide to learn how write an effective essay, which so far has gone along much better than I would have hoped for in two sessions. I've been able to understand what is expected, and thanks to my mentor, have a much better idea on how to best carry out my story. Leaving me feeling confident and reassured about my ability to get everything done!" More than 85% of our students graduate from our programs and plan to pursue a degree and/or career in technology. Through this partnership we hope to provide targeted support for students looking to shape their experience in our programs into a narrative that speaks to their unique skills and abilities. We are very excited to meet our students’ needs and look forward to continuing our work with Forbes in the future! “We’re incredibly excited to work with America On Tech on this pilot program and to help students tell their personal stories in the best possible form. We hope to maintain and grow this partnership for years to come.” - Noah Kirsch, Forbes “The college application process is tough. Without appropriate support, students can really struggle to push through. We’re so excited to be able to offer this program to students and can’t thank the Forbes team enough for their time and dedication to these future technology leaders! Our programs are designed to prepare students to feel confident in their ability to pursue degrees and careers in technology- this program is helping us do just that.” - Kylie Repasy, America On Tech “This writing program is helping me think about stories and things that I have been through that will make me stand out to colleges. The one-on-one peer mentoring is great because I am getting all the time and help that I need. This has been an amazing program because it's helping me a lot and I would totally recommend this to anyone that needs help with their college essay.” - Sutrah Begum, America On Tech student Interested in establishing a program in partnership with America On Tech?
