Ever heard of Jira or Trello?! If so, then you’ve benefited from the expertise of one of our incredible partners, Atlassian. Atlassian is an international software company based in Australia that helps develop products for software development and project management teams. Millions of users globally rely on Atlassian products daily for improving their own softwares, collaborations, and code quality. America On Tech and Atlassian joined forces on April 13th, 2021 to host one of our spring semester career days for our Tech Flex Leaders program. During this event, Atlassian volunteers shared career insights with our students as they prepare to embark on their own technology careers via their paid summer tech internships. This career day was made possible thanks to the 12 volunteers from Atlassian who connected with 21 of our Tech Flex Leaders. The event kicked off with a panel discussion hosted by the Atlassian team members where they answered questions about their career trajectories. From interview best practices to navigating career changes, our students received insight from representatives of many different areas of technology. Following the panel discussion was our networking segment, where our leaders were placed into small groups with the Atlassian volunteers. Through multiple rounds of more intimate conversations, students were able to take a deeper dive into some of the insight lent during the panel discussion. Our students really appreciated the opportunity to connect with volunteers from so many different technological backgrounds, claiming the insight they received will surely help them prepare for their own potential careers in the tech world. Read some of their comments on the day below: "I want to thank the panelists for taking their time to spend with us and giving us a snippet of their day at a company who I used the products for in my day to day. I really enjoy listening to the people who are well into their career talk about how they started, how they got there, and how they cope with stress and burnouts especially in tech. It gives at least for me a sense of direction to where I want to head in the future and also lets me know the do's and don'ts. It's also great to hear that people are still figuring it out...It was great to hear a panelist, Swati, who started off as an intern but later received an offer or Barry who started off as a QA - which is where I also started and still am in, who then later shifted into development." - Andy Chen "After today's career day I feel more confident if not more than ever about my interest in tech. Hearing from these tech professionals at Atlassian gave me hope that I am more than capable to study Computer Science. I could feel the in-depth knowledge by the engineers in the call and learned what Atlassian is currently working on in their engineering team. I look forward to interning at tech companies such as Atlassian." - George Sucuzhanay "Today's career day with Atlassian was great. The panel, in the beginning, was extremely informative with great thorough questions and amazing answers from everyone. My favorite part was definitely getting to talk one-on-one with everyone. The groups were small and it felt like they truly cared about the questions we were asking. The panelists in my group- Swati Raju, Stephen Deasy, and Stacey Agard- were great at answering our questions and taking the time to give us advice for college and the future. I would have loved more time with the panelists for questions before they were taken away to another breakout room. Ultimately, I am glad I signed up for today's career day and can't wait to hopefully attend others." - Ranyeli Frias Thanks so much to Atlassian for all of their support!
