 On October 29, 2020, America On Tech joined twelve Capital One employees for an evening of conversation and networking. Beginning with a panel discussion about professional development and breaking into the technology field, students and volunteers were then broken into small groups to discuss further. Before closing out the event, all participants returned to the main session for final reflections. Capital One is an American bank holding company with a suite of technology-aligned careers of interest to our students.  Capital One panelists respond to questions about their career paths and tech experiences. The Capital One employees came to the event with a range of professional experiences and titles: from designers to engineers to master system integrators. The discussion was lively and engaging and students learned more about the importance of building a strong portfolio, starting now! In addition, panelists encouraged students to explore all of their various interests, especially in college, in the hopes that they might land on an area of interest or opportunity they didn’t initially anticipate.  One of the Capital One panelists meets with students during the breakout session. Following this event, one of our students noted, “the Career Day was definitely fun and intriguing. It was very interesting to hear all the different stories, it changed my perspective on education in the technology field. I didn't realize that college was also a time to explore different fields in technology. I've always been struggling to figure out what exactly I wanted to do in the technology field and this panel has given me some helpful insight on how I can do that. It was a pleasure to hear everyone's stories and it definitely helped me a lot!”  All participants return whole-group to close out the Virtual Career Day! A huge thanks to all of the employees at Capital One for taking part in this event. We’re confident that students left the virtual room feeling more confident in their ability to pursue their technology interests- a huge win!
