On June 11, 2020, America On Tech (AOT) partnered with Accenture to host a Career Day for New York City America On Tech students and alumni. This career day was centered around the concept of Design Thinking, giving our students the opportunity to learn this highly sought out skill. The career day kicked off with a welcome and introduction by Accenture Consultants who joined our 20 students and alumni by first introducing and explaining the concept of design thinking and how different teams across Accenture use this methodology on projects and client engagements. After the introductions, AOT students and Accenture consultants were separated into breakout groups where 5 AOT students were paired with 3 Accenture team members. During this activity AOT students got to explore how to answer the question: “how students should go about picking their major/career?”. AOT students used Mural to participate in this activity and share their answers and insights to ideate solutions through different components of design thinking. Afterwards, the students and Accenture team returned to the main room and each group shared major ideas and themes that came up during their discussions. Even though at this point the career day was officially over, the Accenture team generously offered to stay on the Zoom session longer to answer any questions AOT students had in regards to their college majors and career decisions. Our students and the Accenture team were once again broken up into teams and breakout rooms where professional advice and insights were shared. Everyone returned one last time to the main meeting room in Zoom for thank you’s and farewells.
One of AOT's students, Rofeeah A had the following to say about the event: “The fact that the Accenture team took the time to talk to us about college and career decisions shows how deeply invested they are in the next generation of tech leaders. I barely have anyone to turn to for these types of questions, so talking to them was a blessing! Their advice helps motivate me to focus on doing what I love long term.” The event overall was hugely successful and informative and AOT is thankful for Accenture’s continued partnership over the years.
